Phases of Attaining Invisalign

Invisalign might feel like it has been around forever. However, the truth is, it is still relatively new. The company behind Invisalign is less than 20 years old. It took some time for people to warm up to the idea of using clear plastic trays to straighten teeth. It was not until around 2004 that Invisalign really started becoming a popular choice. Today, Invisalign treatment makes up about 6% of teen orthodontics. It also made up an impressive 31% of adult orthodontics.

Even though many patients still use other methods to straighten their teeth, but some people still want to learn about Invisalign process.

Key Invisalign Treatment Phases You Need to Know

Here we will describe the important steps of teeth straightening with Invisalign,

Initial Consultation

The first step in the Invisalign process is a consultation, just like with any other dental treatment. During this visit, your dentist or orthodontist will assess your oral health to determine if Invisalign is the right option for you.

In some cases, you may need a different treatment, such as traditional braces. Or you might need to have teeth extracted before starting any orthodontic work. Your dentist will take an x-ray or a 3D scan of your mouth to get a detailed look at your teeth. Within minutes, they will generate a lifelike 3D model of your teeth on the computer for both of you to review. This allows the dentist to examine the shape, position, and alignment of each tooth and see how your teeth fit together.Phases of Attaining Invisalign

Check for Any Dental Problems

The consultation is also a chance for your dentist to check for any dental issues, like cavities or gum problems. These may need to be addressed before starting Invisalign. If Invisalign is not a good fit for your specific needs, other treatments like traditional braces may be suggested.

It is also important to understand that Invisalign requires commitment. Patients must wear the aligners for 20–22 hours a day to see effective results. During the consultation, you will discuss your goals and expectations with your dentist. It helps in ensuring that the treatment plan aligns with what you are looking for. Being prepared for the time commitment and any lifestyle adjustments is key to success with Invisalign.

Treatment Planning

Once you are approved for Invisalign, the next step is creating your treatment plan.

Using the 3D scans or impressions taken during your consultation, the Invisalign software maps out the entire process, from your current teeth alignment to the final result. The program calculates each step needed to move your teeth into their ideal positions. Your dentist can review the plan, make adjustments if needed, and show you exactly how your teeth will progress over time before anything is finalized.

Initially, only the first few months of aligners are made. This is because everyone’s mouth can change throughout the process. Regular check-ins with your dentist help ensure everything stays on track. If any dental issues are identified during planning, your dentist may address them first to give you the best possible results.

Digital Impressions and Aligner Creation

If you are approved for Invisalign, the next step involves taking precise digital impressions using the iTero Element scanner. This scanner captures thousands of images per second, providing far more accuracy than traditional messy molds. Advanced software then calculates the exact force needed to move each tooth.

The data is sent to the Invisalign lab, where experts analyze it, create a personalized straightening plan, and produce your custom aligners. Each aligner is carefully trimmed to fit your gum line for maximum comfort and a natural look.

Some patients may also need SmartForce attachments. These are small, tooth-colored pieces attached to specific teeth to help with certain movements. These attachments are customized to ensure precise adjustments.

Throughout the process, your dentist works closely with the lab, reviewing and refining the aligners to make sure they meet your needs. This teamwork ensures your aligners are perfectly tailored for your treatment!

“The mouth is the gateway to the body.”

Wearing Your Aligners

When your aligners are ready, you will pick them up from our office, and dentist will guide you on how to use them. Each aligner is unique and needs to be worn in a specific order, typically for two weeks per aligner. As you move through the series, each aligner gradually shifts your teeth closer to their ideal positions.

You can remove your aligners when eating, drinking (anything other than water), or brushing your teeth. However, for the treatment to work as planned, you should wear them as much as possible. Ideally, you should wear them for about 18–22 hours a day. If you don’t wear them consistently, your teeth won’t move as expected, and future aligners may not fit properly.

Follow-Up Appointments

You will switch to a new set of aligners every two weeks, with each set bringing your teeth closer to your ideal smile. About every six weeks, you will visit your dentist to check your progress and make adjustments if needed.

If your treatment is not on track, your dentist may take a new digital scan and order additional aligners from the Invisalign lab. After completing your last set, if minor tweaks are still needed, your dentist can request refinement aligners at no extra cost. These adjustments may take up to a month but ensure your smile is just right.

Replacing Your Aligners

During your Invisalign treatment, you’ll need to switch to a new set of aligners about every two weeks. Each new set helps your teeth gradually move closer to their ideal position.

Your dentist will monitor your progress and may adjust the timeline based on how your treatment is going. Sticking to the recommended schedule is key—it ensures the best results, avoids delays, and prevents any complications or misalignment.

Simply follow the plan, and you’ll be on your way to a beautifully aligned smile.
